Rensselaer Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment

چکیده
The Rensselaer Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (RIDGE) is a continuation of the Isolated Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE), which flew on three space flight experiments aboard the space shuttle Columbia. The RIDGE is an extension to the completed flight experiments by IDGE, to further investigate phenomenon uncovered in the analysis of data obtained by these earlier efforts. The first two space flight experiments, USMP-2 and 3, were conducted with succinonitrile (SCN) as the growth material. Analysis showed that SCN dendrites closely followed the predictions of Ivantsov for dendrites grown in convection free environments, but with important differences. The third microgravity experiment, USMP-4, used pivalic acid, (PVA), a more anisotropic material, for the growth medium. Preliminary analysis found that, while existing solidification theories could closely predict the growth of SCN dendrites the approximation was not as good for pivalic acid. The third flight experiment was equipped with a video capture system. Data obtained from the captured video contained approximately 30 frames per second of data, over the entire growth process. Initial analysis of the video has shown that the dendrites grown in PVA exhibit a time dependent growth characteristic and may not always have reached steady-state growth during the experiment. The purpose of this paper will be to present continued analysis of the characterization of PVA dendrites as well as further in-depth analysis of the data obtained from the video images captured on the final flight experiment.

Follow-on Research Activities for the Rensselaer Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (ridge)
The RIDGE effort continues the aegis of the earlier, NASA-sponsored, Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE) series of experiments through the continued analysis of microgravity data acquired during these earlier space flights. The preliminary observations presented here demonstrate that there are significant differences between SCN and the more anisotropic PVA dendrites. The side branch ...
متن کاملNonconstant Tip Velocity in Microgravity Dendritic Growth
Pivalic acid dendrites grown and observed as part of the USMP-4 isothermal dendritic growth experiment aboard the space shuttle Columbia show an initial transient followed by an accelerating tip growth that may approach a constant growth rate. The mechanism responsible for this behavior is not as yet clear and may be due to experimental factors such as the long-range thermal interactions betwee...
متن کاملTime-evolving Growth Rates in Microgravity-grown Pivalic Acid Dendrites
Pivalic acid dendrites were crystallized under a range of thermal supercoolings and observed aboard the space shuttle Columbia as part of the USMP-4 Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment. The dendrites exhibit an initial transient period of growth, followed by an acceleration period, which may gradually tend toward a constant growth rate. The variation of this non-steady-state behavior on the ...
متن کاملCrossover Scaling in Dendritic Evolution at Low Undercooling
We examine scaling in two-dimensional simulations of dendritic growth at low undercooling, as well as in three-dimensional pivalic acid dendrites grown on NASA’s USMP-4 isothermal dendritic growth experiment. We report new results on self-affine evolution in both the experiments and simulations. We find that the time-dependent scaling of our low undercooling simulations displays a crossover sca...
متن کاملComparison of Dendritic Growth
The Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE) is a series of orbital space flight experiments designed to obtain data for a critical test of dendritic growth theory. The first two experiments, flown in 1994 and 1996, were conducted as part of the United States Microgravity Payload Shuttle missions, USMP-2 and USMP-3. These flights provided dendritic growth speeds and tip radii of pure succi...
